37th Annual Dinner Dance Date Set

The 37th Annual Holiday with Heart Charity Gayla will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2014. This is a change from a previously announced date. In working with our vendors, a Sunday date for this year was necessary to be able to provide the same level of service and elegance our guests have come to expect. Ticket prices are also to remain the same price as 2013 ($75). Mark your calendars now!

HWH Pleased to Announce Newest Sponsor

We are pleased to have Hitchings Insurance as our newest sponsor.  Based in Findlay, they have been assisting LGBT citizens of N.W. Ohio with insurance needs since 1968.  Hitchings Insurance is an independent agency that can match your coverage requirements with just the right policy to fit your one of a kind situation and budget.  Click the logo to link to their website.
HWH sponsorships are greatly appreciated, as they defray the costs of putting on the event, allowing a greater portion of ticket sales to be directed to the charitable objectives.

Beneficiaries Announced for 2014 Annual Dinner Dance

Why Marriage Matters Ohio is a grassroots public education campaign to build support for marriage equality in Ohio. This campaign is about having conversations and sharing stories, showing that same-sex couples and their families should be welcomed and treated fairly in Ohio. It is about opening hearts and minds throughout our state.
It is a discussion that allows Ohioans in communities across the state to examine their attitudes, beliefs, and assumptions about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people—to consider new information and perhaps reconsider old ideas. It is an opportunity to move a conversation forward about love, commitment, and family.
In Ohio, this conversation has begun. It is time to raise significant visibility of same-sex Ohio couples and their families. This project was founded by Equality Ohio Education Fund, Freedom to Marry, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and the ACLU Foundation of Ohio.

                                        Mission Statement:

The mission of Toledo Mpowerment is to create a happy, healthy, united gay community through education and empowerment.

We are here to provide a safe place for 18-29 year old gay/bisexual/transgender men to make friends, get education they need, and to learn and grow from our programs so that they may go out into the community and help promote HIV education and safer sex.

Disbursement of Proceeds

There have been several questions regarding the disbursement of the funds raised at the 2013 Holiday with Heart event. One of our selected recipients for 2013 was Rainbow Area Youth of Toledo (RAY). After announcing this recipient we discovered that they were not an IRS approved 501 organization. We are restricted to donating to organizations with an active 501 status. We have made repeated attempts to contact the leadership of this organization to have them provide a need that we would be able to fund for their organization and encourage them to complete the 501 application process. We have never had a response to these requests. On July 11 we sent a registered letter to the last known address we had for the group and again received no reply. The receipt for the letter was returned on Tuesday August 5th. At our July 2014 board meeting the decision was made to rescind the designated $1000.00 donation and hold the funds for future donations if we had no response 10 days after receipt of the registered letter.

In response to this situation we have now developed an application form that organizations requesting funding must complete. This form includes a request for the necessary IRS designations. We hope the use of this form will prevent future situations such as we experienced with RAY.

In 2013 we experienced a significant increase in the expenses related to the event. In 2013 the Toledo Club had a change in management. The new management has been more exacting in their accounting of expenses related to events, this, plus the anticipated increase in food and other service costs, accounts for the significant increase in expense. Again we have responded to these changes and had discussions with the Toledo Club management in an effort to reduce costs and maintain the quality of the event. The board has also examined alternative venues for our event and discovered that we would be facing similar costs and losing the quality of venue therefore have elected to remain at the Toledo Club for 2014. We are not increasing the registration fee for the event in 2014.
